On a near perfect pitch and on a sunny April afternoon, Aberaeron were in good spirits and looked forward to locking horns with high flying Llanfair.
Aberaeron were without some key players, but there was genuine confidence by the Aberaeron management and they received terrific responses from the team but in particular from Dave Evans and Anthony Evans who played out of positions at right back and centre half respectively. They were outstanding all afternoon and may well have inspired every other team member who all performed to the highest level. Llanfair are a good team with some very good players, however for large parts of the game were second best.
Aberaeron created some very good chances in the first half but the final pass seemed to be elusive. They were guilty of conceding too many free-kicks which put the home defence under aerial pressure, however the back-four played really well and had Ollie Farebrother in goal who had an excellent game today. Honours were even at half time and Aberaeron started the second half well and put Llanfair under immediate pressure. Liam Jaques who needed to play a more defensive role in the first half was unleashed and was able to support lone striker Matty Davies who was beginning to ‘bully’ the Llanfair defence with his hold-up play and strong running. Following an excellent move which caused havoc in the Llanfair defence, the ball landed at Liam Jaques’ feet and he calmly scored with a low drive. In past games when Aberaeron took the lead, they have been, sometimes guilty of ‘taking their foot off the pedal’ and, conceding some soft goals- not today! Llanfair had to withstand constant pressure and it was only a matter of time before Aberaeron scored again. Matty Davies created a couple of very good chances as did Chris Wilkins and Liam Jaques. Jaques then beat two players with ease and was clearly impeded in the area for a penalty which Matty Davies took and scored with aplomb.
Llanfair did create a few chances but the home defence were in no mood to concede and 2-0 was a fair reflection of the game. A terrific home win showing excellent team spirit alongside hard work and talent.
