Aberaeron cruised through the 1st qualifying round of the JD Welsh Cup in what was the first game back in front of spectators. It didn’t take the home team long to gain the lead, Sam Middleton heading in a rocket header from a corner only 6 minutes into the game. Aberaeron doubled their lead 5 minutes later with Ryan Davies slotting one past the goalkeeper. Gareth Lewis then put the home team 3-0 up in the 25th minute with Aberaeron looking extremely comfortable on the ball. Ryan Davies scored his second of the match in the 30th minute to put Aberaeron 4-0 up.
Borth made a rare spate of possession count by making the game 4-1 in the 36th minute. A goal-line clearance from left wing-back Dafydd Roberts proved to be all for nothing as a Borth player was subsequently fouled in the box. Christopher Wylde’s penalty was almost saved by Aberaeron goalkeeper Casey Walters, but there was too much power on the shot for him to keep out. Nerves were calmed however as Aberaeron replied almost instantly with Gareth Lewis’ gamble at the back post paying off and the sides went in at half time with Aberaeron leading 5-1.
Aberaeron seemed to take their foot off the gas in the second half with the hot, humid weather playing its part. Gareth Severs tapped into an open goal to put Aberaeron 6-1 up half-way through the second half, with Borth getting another consolation goal through Joshua Evans after a long-ball down the middle was pounced on to end the match 6-2.
Aberaeron will next face Builth Wells at home in the Second Qualifying Round of the JD Welsh Cup on Saturday the 24th of July.
